Walking Holidays in Switzerland - Walking the Bernese Highlights East

Bernese Highlights - East

Photo of the accommodation

A variety of accommodation is used on this trek ranging from mountain inns to 3 star hotels. All hotels have rooms with private bathroom except one mountain inn where you only have a wash basin in the room and share the shower and WC. Most offer drying rooms for wet clothing and boots. Breakfast and dinner are included on all nights. Dinner will be three courses and breakfasts are of buffet style.

We have personally stayed in or visited all of our accommodations. They have all been selected for their great locations, friendly atmosphere and traditional hospitality, as well as the warm welcome they offer to walkers. Below is a summary of our usual accommodations*.

On this trek, the accommodation ranges from simple mountain inns to 3* hotels. All accommodations have a private bathroom except one mountain inn where you only have a wash basin in the room and share the shower and WC. Most offer drying rooms for wet clothing and boots. Please note you will be without your main luggage for nights 2 & 5 so will need to pack an overnight bag.

Night 1: Engelberg

Surrounded by imposing mountains, a friendly greeting is received at this lovely 3* hotel with a warm Swiss feel.  Rooms are comfortable and well-equipped for your stay. There is a cosy bar and lounge area for drinks and snacks. Dinner is taken in the grand style restaurant and there will be three courses with a choice. Breakfast is a very enjoyable buffet to set you on your way for the first day in the mountains.

All rooms feature free Wi-Fi, television, telephone, safe, tea/coffee making facilities and private bathroom with WC, shower/bath and hairdryer.

Night 2: Engstlenalp

This hotel has much history as a mountain inn and the atmosphere reflects just that.  Rooms are comfortable but simple in style and decor.  There is a communal bar area for coffees, drinks and snacks and dinner is ‘mountain style’ served in the delightful wooded restaurant. You certainly feel as though you’re amongst the mountains tonight!

All rooms feature free Wi-Fi and private bathroom with WC and shower/bath.

Nights 3 & 4: Meiringen

This 3* hotel is located right next to the railway station and has been owned and run by Felix Tschan and wife for many years. In summer there is an outside bar area where drinks and snacks may be enjoyed all day long and often musicians play traditional music in the early evening. The restaurant is popular with locals and cuisine is well cooked and presented. There is a choice at each of the three courses. Breakfast is an excellent buffet including delicious breads from the nearby bakery.

All rooms feature free Wi-Fi, television, telephone, safe, tea/coffee making facilities and private bathroom with WC, shower/bath and hairdryer.

Night 5: Schwarzwaldalp

This chalet is presented in a traditional Swiss style all wood and very charming.  Rooms are small and cosy but without private bathrooms, they do have wash basins in the rooms with shared showers and toilets nearby. Some guests may stay in an adjacent building with dormitory style accommodation which are all private (advised at booking time). Dinner will be traditional mountain food most likely featuring cheese from the alp and all meals are well presented and are fresh, seasonal, local products. Breakfast is buffet style.

All rooms feature free Wi-Fi, wash basin and shared bathroom with WC and shower.

Night 6: Grindelwald

Your lovely hosts Coni & Beni will welcome you to their simple 3* hotel which has well furnished rooms and a small terrace. They have a communal indoor/outdoor lounge area where you can relax. Breakfast only is served here and is one of the best of the entire trek!  Dinner is taken at a 4* hotel about 10 minutes’ walk away as this hotel does not serve dinner.

All rooms feature free Wi-Fi, television, telephone and private bathroom with WC, shower/bath and hairdryer.

Night 7: Murren

Ruth and Othmar Suter run an immensely homely 3* hotel with comfortable rooms and a good restaurant. In warm weather dinner can be taken outside on the terrace to watch the sun go down over the Jungfrau. Dinner is 3 courses without a choice so check with Reception if you have concerns or special requests. In the morning a superb breakfast buffet is served.

All rooms feature free Wi-Fi, television, telephone and private bathroom with WC, shower/bath and hairdryer.
