Experience the Durmitor massif, located in the widest and highest part of Dinarides. It is the most known and the highest mountain range of northern Montenegro. The highest peak of Durmitor is Bobotov Kuk, at 2,523 meters above the sea level. This region offers exceptional beauties of nature; attractive morphology, distinctive landscapes, and a very rich and interesting living world. As deserved the park became a UNESCO site in 1980. 

Durmitor National Park

Durmitor National Park is situated in North West Montenegro and its eighteen glacial lakes, commonly known as ‘mountain eyes’ give exquisite charm to the beautiful mountain masiff of Durmitor. The rivers Tara, Draga, Susica and Komarnica have made remarkable canyon valleys in this park. The most impressive is the Tara Canyon, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the second deepest canyon in the world at 1,300m.

The Centre

The town of Zabljak (population c. 2,000) is the highest in the Balkans, at 1,456m above sea level and is a popular tourist destination, both in the summer and winter. Zabljak was mostly re-built after WWII and again after the Balkan wars. The town has the usual facilities, with shops, a pharmacy, banks, bars etc. Zabljak is an easy 2km walk from the main entrance gate to the Durmitor National Park, with a visitor centre nearby. Their helpful staff can advise on walking routes, conditions etc.

Optional Extension

Located at the foot of the Bjelasica and Sinjajevina mountains and with the Tara River flowing to its north. Biogradska National Park is the site of one of the last three large virgin forests in Europe and is home to a great diversity of flora and fauna.  At its heart lies Biogradsko Jezero, the largest glacial lake in the park. Our base is the town of Kolasin with a population of about 3,000. Established by the Turks in the 17th century. It lies at just under 1,000m above sea level, about 10km SW of Biogradska. The town has normal facilities given its size, with shops, a pharmacy, banks, bars etc.

Immerse yourself in the beautiful surroundings of the virgin forests of Biogradska. Go back to basics and spend a night in an eco-lodge and experience the nature, food and customs of the people who live here.

The Walking

The walking itself ranges from tough mountain ascents and dizzying clifftops to gentle strolls past shepherds’ huts on alpine meadows with a stark backdrop of high, jagged peaks.

With fifty peaks higher than 2,000 m (Bobotov Kuk reaches a height of 2,523 m) down to Tara River Gorge (Europe's deepest gorge) there is plenty to challenge the most intrepid of walkers.

You can walk entirely at your own pace and we provide extensive walking notes giving distances, route directions, ascents, descents and walking times. 

Guided

We offer 4 days guided walking which includes an English-speaking guide and all required transport. There is also an option to have more guided days if required.

Availability Information

The best time to visit Northern Montenegro is from the middle of May until the end of September. The months May, June and September see plenty of warm sunshine and still within the quiet period. July and August are the warmest, driest and busiest months.  

Please note our best to go information is generally referring to the walking which may fall in the early or late season in some places. This may mean that not all tourist facilities will be open at the time you visit.
