Walking Holiday Spain - Canary Islands - Lanzarote
Lanzarote is the most easterly of the Canary Islands, located just 79 miles off the coast of Africa. As with the other Canary Islands it was formed through volcanic activity. After the eruptions of the 18th and 19th century, and due to the islands dry climate and lack of erosion, many parts of the island look like they come from another world with the lava flows appearing like they did soon after the eruptions.
The island has a number of interesting volcanic features, amongst which is the Atlantida tunnel which is one of the longest volcanic tunnels in the world at nearly 5 miles long. The volcanic activity on some of the other Canary Islands has resulted in them having black beaches. However Lanzarote is fortunate to be blessed with also having some white sandy beaches, not all of which are covered in tourists!
Lanzarote has a UNESCO Biosphere protected status due to its exceptional ecosystems and volcanic landscapes. Despite the islands volcanic appearance many plants have adapted to live on the island including some only found on Lanzarote. After the islands winter rainfall the vegetation comes to a colourful bloom between February and March.
Lanzarote had previously not been blessed with a well-waymarked network of paths, but this situation is improving with the increase in popularity of walking on the island. With our detailed walking notes you will have no problem exploring the many delights of the island.
Most of the walking takes place in either the north east or south west of the island, with each area offering very different scenery and walking to enjoy. The north east is dominated by its spine of hills running to the very northern point of the island. This is the greener side of the island, yet still rugged, and you will encounter many beautiful colours, shapes and textures on your walks here. The south west is dominated by the islands volcanic history, but the views are nonetheless breathtaking. As well as the many colours of the volcanic landscape there are vineyards adding vibrancy to the hills, as well as enabling you to sample the malvasia wine at the end of your walks! This island offers a tremendous opportunity to explore these fascinating landscapes.
Guided - Independent Walking
On our guided independent holidays you will be collected from your hotel and transported to the beginning of the walk and collected at the end. These walks will all be in small groups where you be led by a knowledgeable trained guide. The walks will be a combination of linear and circular options and the distances of these vary between 4 and 8 miles.
We arrange 4 walks per week which range from easy to moderate. The walks are selected to enable you to enjoy the island’s natural environment and explore the many differing landscapes on offer. These can include a trip to the island’s highest mountain of Peñas del Chache (671m) or to visit some of the many interesting volcanoes. You can take additional walks if you wish to on your ‘days off’.
Self-Guided
This is available all year round using our exclusive Walk Booklet which contains the best walks which Lanzarote has to offer. We give full directional notes, average walking times and distances, the extent of ascents and descents and points of interest. We also provide the best walking map of the island. The walks range from easy to moderate in difficulty with some challenging extensions.
A car is the best way to access the walking areas and this is available at a supplement, but most walks are also available by public transport and/or taxi. Our walks are mostly circular but a couple of the walks are linear and it would be necessary to take a bus or taxi to the start or the end.

Availability Information
Lanzarote
enjoys mild climatic conditions all year round, with temperatures in the low
20’s Celsius during the winter to over 30 Celsius in the height of summer. May through to August has
a tendency to be windy. Due to the island being a lot flatter than the others in the
Canaries it lacks the hills which can create rain and is therefore drier as a
result, averaging only 5 ½ inches of rain per year. This also leads to 345 days
of sunshine a year!
Please note our best to go information is generally referring to the walking which may fall in the early or late season in some places. This may mean that not all tourist facilities will be open at the time you visit.
