Walking Holiday Turkey - Lycian Way East
On this trek you will experience the more extreme, dramatic and challenging walks of the Lycian Way as the trail nears its end in Anatlya’s Old Town – basically, it is the Grand Finale with soaring peaks, deep river gorges and sheer cliffs…..but we feature this section in reverse heading from the high mountains to the sea. You will experience the shaded tranquility of deep river gorges crossing crystal clear waters or bathing in natural pools. There are serene green valleys filled with lush pastures and grazing cows. One superb days’ walking takes you over the plateau below the summit of Mount Tahtali with far reaching views of mountain and sea, carpets of wild flowers and strange rock formations. See Chimaera – The Eternal Flames which suddenly meet you on your final descent to Cirali – a relaxed, very Turkish, unspoiled beach ‘resort’ where Turtles share the beach with humans. Here, rest and swim, visit archeological sites or take a superb coastal walk. Then walk along the coast for two quite demanding days past ancient ruins andmany far reaching views.
Start this section of the Lycian Way with a superb
coastal walk to pretty Beycik. The next day, it’s down to the coast through
deep ravines filled with wild flowers and butterflies, passing the Eternal
Flames of Chimaera before arriving in Cirali. With two nights here, you have a
free day to relax or visit nearby archaeological sites. Then enjoy the ancient
city of Olympos before walking to the coastal village of Adrasan. The final day
offers a spectacular coastal walk before transferring to the delightful town of
Antalya.
On this reasonably demanding section of the Lycian Way, a good level
of fitness and stamina is required, but the rewards are immense, offering an
unspoilt side of Turkey with outstanding geology and scenery. Paths vary from
forest tracks to steep mountain trails, but there are no vertiginous sections.
Please note our ascents and descents are measured with GPS technology and takes into acount every small rise and drop on a walk. Experience shows that they can exagerate a walk by 30%. Our timings allow for stops and picnics.
Day 1: Fly to Antalya and transfer to Tekirova – about 1 hour.
Day 2: Tekirova to Cirali. This
is a walk of two halves. In the morning, it’s a long but easy saunter around
the picturesque headland with plenty of opportunities to swim. The lunch-stop
is on the beach at Maden. The afternoon’s walk ascends and descends on narrow
mule tracks before reaching Cirali. Here you are collected and taken to Beycik
to overnight.
12 miles Ascent 600m Descent 615m 5 hours
Day 3: Beycik to Tahtali. Today’s
walk offers the choice of a mountain hike up to the shoulder of Tahtali Dagi,
or you can stop halfway up at a shady ‘yayla’. The full hike is a long climb,
but the rewards are magnificent. Enjoy the alpine flowers and panoramic views,
never to be forgotten. Descend by the same route to Beycik to overnight.
8 miles Ascent 950m Descent 950m 6 hours
Day 4: Beycik to Cirali. You leave Beycik and spend the morning gently walking down towards Ulupinar
famous for its falls, pools and trout restaurants. After lunch, cross the river before a final
ascent to views of Cirali and the sea beckoning in the distance. As you descend to Cirali , the route passes
several sites where the eternal flames of Chimaera – steeped in history and
legend, burn continually. Overnight
in Cirali.
10 miles Ascent 260m Descent 880m 6 hours
Day 5: Cirali – Free day. Explore the ruins of the ancient
cities of Olympos or Phaselis, or undertake the walk that you did not do yesterday, to reach the start by using the 'Dolmus' (shared taxi) system. Or just relax on the
beach and swim in the crystal clear sea. Overnight Cirali.
Day
6: Cirali to Adrasan. This
is a long day, albeit a great trek encompassing so much that is memorable about
Turkey. After an hour meandering around the ancient site of Olympos close to
the beach, you climb steeply continually to 650 metres and the top of Musa Dag
(Moses Mountain). The serenity of your surroundings is very special. After
lunch close to an old shepherd’s hut you start the gradual descent back to sea
level through shady pine trees following the course of the canyon until you
wander past the greenhouses of Adrasan then to the beach and a swim! Overnight Adrasan.
10 miles Ascent 1050m Descent 800m 8 hours
Day 7: Adrasan to Karaoz (lighthouse)
This is a fitting end to the week’s trek. Starting from your
accommodation you wind your way up through the forest to 500 metres with
wonderful views out towards Bes Adakar (Five Islands). After a strenuous climb
you are rewarded with your first glimpse of the lighthouse at Cape Gelidonia.
Thereafter it’s a gentle amble down to view the Cape and onwards for your final
swim before being picked up at a tiny hidden cove, for the afternoon transfer (2 hours) to Antalya. We do not provide dinner on the last night so you are free to choose from one of the many restaurants in the city now you are familiar with the cuisine. Overnight Antalya.
10 miles
Ascent 790m Descent 800m 6 hours
Day 8: Antalya
