The Walking

The National Parks of St. Lucia and the National Trust are becoming increasingly active in setting up new hiking routes for bird watching and plant studies.  All the walking we offer is in the region of Soufriere in the south of the island.  This is less populated than the far north and is  lush and green with a greater number of hiking trails.  The Fer de Lance, St. Lucia’s rarely seen poisonous snake, is not native of this southern region.  Aside from the challenging ascent of Gros Piton, most of the walking is easy to moderate. Easy walks can be through the Rain Forest to waterfalls with warm pools for bathing.  Longer walks include several Rain Forest trails in the highlands above Soufriere or a Jungle walk to the steaming volcanic area of Sulphur Springs.  More challenging is the ascent of the Gros Piton for astounding views of St. Lucia and islands beyond or a cross island hike.  Walks generally last for a morning or afternoon, with flexible start times to suit individual interests from bird watching to documenting rare flowers and plants.

Getting Around

The best way to explore the beautiful St. Lucian countryside is by taxi or rental car and with driving on the left, there are few worries other than the avoidance of the odd pothole! A car may be collected from the airport, or we can arrange transfers to your accommodation and have a car delivered the next day. Transfers can be arranged as an alternative in both directions and you can use taxis to get around. Guided walks include transportation to and from your accommodation.

Self Guided Walking

There are a number of short walks  you can take on the island, however we believe that taking a guide is advisable to fully enjoy the walks and ensure maximum safety as paths may often become overgrown and indistinct. We are therefore not producing a self guided walk booklet for this destination, but including a personal guide in our price.

Guided Walking

The knowledge of a local guide can truly enhance a walk along with obtaining any necessary permits required in protected areas. Our guide is a local chap who was brought up in the lush area above Soufriere.  His grandparents taught him the medicinal use of native plants surrounding their home and this he still uses today. This knowledge he passes on to his walkers with great enthusiasm. He has been guiding walkers on St. Lucia for many years and has his own business guiding for hotels and individuals. The duration of most walks is half a day and walks are arranged to suit your interest and ability and may include a picnic or refreshing local fruits.  Transportation is included to and from your accommodation, entry fees are not included into National Parks and Forest Reserves. We include a package of 4 guided walks, a trip to the top of Gros Piton can be substituted, subject to weather, for an additional supplement payable locally.

Island Hopping

Why not combine St. Lucia with Dominica, a short hop by plane. Dominica is an exceptional walker’s paradise, with St. Lucia not only offering some superb walking but also relaxation by

the sea in a comfortable resort hotel or villa. You can make your trip to St. Lucia part of a longer trip to

the Caribbean, we will just take care of the arrangements on St. Lucia and you can make all your other plans.

Anse Chastenet - 4 Star

Anse Chastenet Estate is set in 600 lush tropical acres bordering two soft, silver sand beaches near to Soufriere and close to the two renowned peaks of the Pitons. The hotel rooms are spread over the hillside above a perfect, palm fringed cove. In total there are 49 rooms of four different categories which grow in size and view quality as you go up the grades. Every room is different with a running theme of views, openness and privacy.

There are 12 air-conditioned beach rooms, but the rest do not feature electric air conditioning, but are cooled by soft sea breezes and ceiling fans. Lighting is designed not to attract mosquitoes and other creatures and casts a soft glow over the whole area. The hotel does not have a swimming pool as the clear, warm waters of the Caribbean Sea are perfect all year for swimming. Pathways at Anse Chastenet are fairly steep and there are a number of steps to negotiate. However, transportation is always there if you feel to weary to climb to your room!

All rooms are equipped in much the same way and have fridge with ice compartment, tea/coffee maker, ceiling fans and large netted beds. Shower rooms feature luxurious toiletries, hairdryer and bath robes.

There are four categories of accommodation. All rooms feature free Wi-Fi, tea/coffee making facilties, safe and private bathroom with WC, shower/bath and hairdryer.

La Bagatelle is a wonderfully spacious fully serviced villa situated on a hillside overlooking the spectacular Piton mountains and the Caribbean Sea. Surrounded by palm trees, bamboos and a cascade of tropical flowers, Soufriere is just 15 minutes’ drive away. Each villa comfortably accommodates four persons.

This beautiful, traditionally styled two storey house features one enormous 1700 square foot living and dining area on the upper level.  Adjacent to this is your own 18 ft x 10 ft pool and very comfortable sun loungers with a part covered terrace. Views are compelling from the magnificent lounge and dining area and here you can relax on the comfy sofas, laze with a book on the four-poster day bed or gently swing in the hammock which catches the last of the days' sunshine.  The whole area is open to sea breezes but all secure and lockable.

All rooms feature free Wi-Fi, safe and private bathroom with WC, shower/bath and hairdryer.

Stonefield Estate is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful Estates in the Caribbean with its stunning back drop of the twin peaks of the Pitons. Once a lime and cocoa plantation, the grounds remain lush with abundant tropical foliage and flowers.  Trails meander through the gardens leading to any one of 17 villas - all airy and bright with wide open verandas and colonial styled furnishings.  Soufriere is just 10 minutes away, as is the white sand beach of Jalousie, both served by a shuttle bus from the hotel.

The villas at Stonefield Estate Villa Resort are beautiful, airy and bright, accented with allusions to French colonial style including wide open verandas and private plunge pools, gardens and views of the Pitons.  All furnished with antique, netted four poster beds, the rooms may be fully enclosed by securing the attractive jalousie shutters. Each villa has a small 'kitchen' area with fridge and tea/coffee making facilities. Villas are also equipped with safes, ironing board and iron, telephone, radio and CD player and access to wi-fi. Verandas have sun loungers and hammocks.

Rising majestically above the 600 acre beach front of sister resort Anse Chastanet, Jade Mountain is a cornucopia of organic architecture celebrating St Lucia’s stunning scenic beauty. Expect grand sweeping spaces where bedroom, living area and an extravagant private infinity pool glide into one another embracing the full glory of St Lucia’s Pitons World Heritage Site, and of the course, the eternal Caribbean Sea. Availability Information

Walking is possible for most of the year on St. Lucia with the exception July to September when the heat increases and weather is generally unsettled.  Even during the rainy season, end of September to beginning of November, walking is good as rains mostly fall in the afternoon or just in short cloudbursts.

Please note our best to go information is generally referring to the walking which may fall in the early or late season in some places. This may mean that not all tourist facilities will be open at the time you visit.
