The Walking

Hiking on Dominica can be enjoyed by all levels of walkers and it comes as a great surprise that there is such a superb network of well-maintained hiking trails. Most hiking trails are in the Trois Pitons National Park located in the centre of the island with much of the area preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There is also walking in the north west Cabrits National Park and further trails around Morne Diablotins – Dominica’s highest peak in the north.

Some are gentle short walks through the cloud forest (above rain forest level) to a tranquil lake or an impressive waterfall where a swim in a warm clear pool adds to the excursion. At a moderate level there are plenty of moss-covered trails into the dense steamy rainforest free from the worry of biting, stinging, buzzing creatures as in other such tropical destinations! However, for the truly enthusiastic hiker Dominica features one of the world's top ten best hikes - the haunting Boiling Lake and Valley of Desolation. This is a demanding hike deep into the interior of the island hours from the rest of the world. Furthermore, mountain peaks such as Morne Diablotins at 1447m is there to climb. These hikes can offer a feeling of remoteness seldom possible on our planet.

Itinerary

Hibiscus Valley – Marigot – Nights 1, 2 and 3

Following your arrival on Dominica, it’s just a short transfer to the first of your three unique places to stay. Arriving at Hibiscus Valley, it’s a struggle to focus on the warm welcome from their smiling, happy staff, being so captivated by the gorgeous gardens; the birds, the vibrant colours and scent of tropical flowers. Cottages are simple and completely Dominican. They have all you need with large comfy beds, rustic en-suite shower room, storage space and your own veranda with hammock and views. In the bar, there are simply too many types of ‘bush rum’ to sample before or after delicious home cooked meals. Breakfast is so good too and a time to chat with other guests from far and wide.

Sample Walks:

Secret Pool

A good introduction to the rainforest as you take a half day easy hike to the Secret Pool in a unique location discovered by Hibiscus Valley many years ago. Take a dip before returning to laze on the veranda or ‘tube’ down the Pagua River.

Kalinago Territory Waitukubuli Trail

A full day and moderately challenging hike of about 6 hours along the coast south of Hibiscus. You walk through the Kalinago Territory; that is an area of land donated specially by the Government to the Carib Indians where, as the first settlers on Dominica, they can live and preserve their ancient culture. Agriculture and seascapes dominate the walk which ends at the Kalinago Baraja Aute Heritage Centre.

Northern Coastal hike

Experience the dryer landscape of the northern tip of Dominica walking through villages and along the coast with views over the sea to Marie Galante, Guadeloupe and the Saints. The terrain is volcanic with Morne Aux Diables dominating the landscape. There are falls, frogs and sulphur springs, gloriously verdant forests littered with sweet smelling tropical flowers, birds and bays of crystal-clear sea for an apres hike swim. Moderate in level and about 4 hours.

Fort Young Hotel – Roseau – Night 4

A morning transfer takes you to Roseau and the iconic and oldest of Dominica’s hotels, Fort Young. From here explore the colourful streets of Roseau with charming wooden houses, waterfront and museum. Visit the Botanical Gardens or laze by the hotel pool overlooking the warm Caribbean Sea watching boats come and go.

Roseau is the best base from which to do the famous Boiling Lake and Valley of Desolation Hike and this can be booked as an optional extra. With just a short drive up the Roseau Valley, it’s the best access point for Boiling Lake and close to your hotel after a strenuous but fulfilling day.

Boiling Lake and Valley of Desolation

Without doubt the most famous and one of the most difficult hikes on Dominica. A full day and you need to be fit to experience the wonders of the Valley of Desolation and the far-reaching views of the Morne Trous Pitons National Park. Then the lake itself…..boiling, steaming and a rare insight into the powers of nature below the Earth’s crust. End with a soak in a sulphur spring to ease your aching bones. It’s challenging but a must at 6-8 hours.

Rosalie Bay – Nights 5,6 and 7

Travelling over to the wild and sparsely populated east coast, at Rosalie Bay another aspect of Dominica is experienced in a unique setting nestled in the foothills of the Morne Trois Pitons where the Rosalie River meets the black sand beaches. The sound of distant ocean surf blends with that of the surrounding rainforest and river. Stay in elegantly luxurious rooms, constructed from local wood and stone and powered by wind and solar energy. Local fishermen and farmers supply ingredients for the restaurant, which also uses fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables grown in their organic garden. If a stay at Rosalie Bay doesn’t restore soul and mind, nowhere can!

Sample Hikes:

Sari Sari Falls

Experience an adventurous boulder hopping riverside hike up to the stunning Sari Sari Falls where you can immerse mind and soul under pristine, warm falls, one of Dominica’s iconic experiences. The distance is short, but a bit of a challenge! Much of it follows the White Riverbed up to the falls.

Victoria Falls

A similar, but shorter and easier experience to the Sari Sari Falls as you walk through the lush Zion Valley. Take your time and enjoy nature to the full.

Glasse Trail

Another of Dominica’s old slave trails and this one connects with the Chemin Letang leading upwards and inland to the Morne Trois Pitons. The Glasse Trail is a section leading to the ocean and takes about 2 hours return. The path culminates/commences on a wide expanse of rocks by the Atlantic Ocean. Sit, watch waves, eat a picnic or read a book…it’s a stunning spot.

Kalinago Territory Waitukubuli Trail

See description above.

All walks are guided and reserved prior to departure.

Extend your stay on Dominica!

With so much to see and do on this Nature Island we highly recommend an extension to really explore all the delightful hidden corners! Additional nights enable you to relax within paradise, hike more trails, bathe under waterfalls or jump into a self-drive car experiencing freedom and getting to the truly spectacular surroundings that will leave you in awe.

Our suggestion is 3 nights at Jungle Bay located in the drier south west corner close to Champagne Beach, dive sights and further walking opportunities. Their Adventure Package includes all meals, daily hikes, cultural experiences, yoga and a heavenly Spa experience.

Jungle Bay – Soufriere 3 nights (minimum stay)

Perched on the cool slopes of Morne Acouma  above the pretty village of Soufriere and with incredible views over the bay to Scott’s Head, one finds the newly built Jungle Bay Resort and Spa.

We featured and loved the ‘first’ Jungle Bay, sadly destroyed in 2015’s Storm Erica. With a focus on sustainable tourism, the community and natural ecology of the island, Jungle Bay offers guests

luxuriously ‘rustic’ accommodation which blends unobtrusively into the landscape. Hikes to suit all levels are arranged daily along with other cultural and adventure experiences special to the island. Cuisine is local, healthy and exceptionally delicious.

Sample Hikes featured on Jungle Bay Activity Programme

Perdue Temps Trail

Following the footsteps of Dominica’s ‘maroons’ (run-away slaves) and thereafter the old farmers route to market, this moderate hike of about 5 hours takes in agricultural land, rainforest, river crossings, boulderous falls and a ‘ Garden of Eden’s organic and healing garden..…..virtually all of Dominica in one hike! As you ascend and descend a few of the Morne Trois Pitons lesser peaks the reward is fine views with rainforest sounds as a background.

Galion Loop

A scenic track leading from Souffriere on the coast to the village of Galion passes through the diverse vegetation of Dominica’s far south western corner. At Jungle Bay, your accommodation has some superb stonemasonry and Galion is the mountain village home to the talented stone masons who helped in its construction. A moderate hike of about 4 hours.

Availability Information

The Caribbean has a great range of temperatures being hot and humid at sea level and cooling considerably in the mountains and rain forests.  At sea level expect an average of 80º, with high humidity during the summer, dropping to around 60º at 600-900m.  Constant cooling trade winds bring the temperature down further.  Rainfall occurs all year, mostly during the late afternoon and less during summer.  Walking is possible all year, however it is best to avoid the hurricane season from mid June to October.

Please note our best to go information is generally referring to the walking which may fall in the early or late season in some places. This may mean that not all tourist facilities will be open at the time you visit.
