Walking Holiday Spain - Canary Islands - La Palma
La Palma, a lush, mountainous island in the Western Canaries measuring the equivalent of just 24 miles square offers attractive opportunities for walkers. Its diversity of landscapes constantly change as you gain height or vary direction. There are forests of pine laurel and eucalyptus and meadows strewn with colourful wild flowers.
Farming remains the bedrock of the economy with a wealth of almond groves, tobacco fields, banana plantations and vineyards. In contrast the island also features extensive evidence of volcanic activity with much to explore on foot including the enormous crater of the Caldera de Taburiente in the awe-inspiring and scientifically important National Park. The densely forested northern coast features magnificently rugged sea cliffs and spectacular gorges. You can enjoy exploring the picturesque small towns and villages dotted along the coast and inland.
La Palma offers outstanding walking using a network of way-marked footpaths. Classics include the volcano route with a succession of mostly historic volcanoes; and a fine walk circling the Caldera de Taburiente often on its very rim.
There is a host of other interesting routes including a walk from Las Tricias through idyllic scenes in the north west with a blend of exotic farms next to thousand year old dragon trees; a hike along the canal to the Marcos y Cordero springs involving use of tunnels and a spectacular walk on the ‘roof of the island’ from Pico de la Cruz (2351m) to the highest point on La Palma Roque de las Muchachos (2426m).
Guided-Independent Walking
On our guided independent holidays, most walks are linear and you will be transported to the beginning of the walk and collected at the end. All have some uphill sections but usually you are on descending or contour paths. Distances vary with walking time between 3 – 7 hours.
We provide 4 walks per week which range from moderate to challenging and are chosen to enable you to enjoy the island’s superb landscape. On some days you have a choice of walk and you can take additional walks on your ‘days off’.
You are likely to be part of a cosmopolitan group and will be guided by an experienced guide who will know the paths well. Walkers staying at the Parador will be collected from the hotel those at Las Olas will be collected from a location a few minutes, walk away. These walks are available throughout the year.
Self Guided
Available year round utilising our exclusive Walk Booklet containing the best walks La Palma has to offer. We give full directional notes, average walking times and distances, the extent of ascents and descents and points of interest.
There is a selection of easy, moderate and challenging walks. We also provide public transport details for each walk. We can arrange for a local driver to take you to and from the walks if you prefer; payable locally.
There is a bus from the road outside by the Parador, every 30 mins to Santa Cruz and also in the other direction which takes you directly to some walks.
